The Value of Internships

Internships are the best way to know if the career path you're pursuing is the one for you. Building confidence and communication skills are some of the most valuable advantages. Additionally, it is not only a great resume builder, but internships also provide you with real world experience and a network. Companies that provide these internships do it to find potential full-time workers. About 60% of the time, an internship turns into a job offer!

And, it’s never too early for an internship. If your not sure where to start, check out these resources or attend the Internship Fair on November 14th from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the Kansas Union.

Check out these helpful resources from the University Career Center to explore internships you might want to pursue.

Need Some Electives?

UNIV 120: Introduction to Engaged Learning

Explore your interests in several engaged learning opportunities offered on KU’s campus, including service learning, research, global opportunities, and internships, through self-exploration and hands-on activities related to each experience. You will be able to identify the opportunity/opportunities in which you are most interested and create the materials needed to pursue that experience with the support of your instructor. By the end of the course, you will have a plan outlined to pursue the engaged learning opportunity/opportunities of your choice. You will also have completed at least one requirement related to fulfilling an experiential learning certificate. Sample syllabus

LA&S 490: Internship Exploration

Are you needing or wanting credit for an upcoming internship? If you want to complete an internship that is not related to your major, your department doesn't offer an internship course, you don't meet the requirements for your department's internship course, you are not accepted into a major yet, or you need to explore another option, you may want to consider EPSY 575/LA&S 490: Internship Exploration. This course requires permission from the instructor to enroll, additional coursework outside of the internship conducted via the Internet, working a minimum number of hours a week at the internship, and finding an internship via your own connections or the resources at the University Career Center. ***Approved course for Goal 6 (Innovation and Creativity) of the KU Core. Sample syllabus

Meet Bobby!

Bobby - public relations intern

Name: Bobby Tech

Year: Senior

Major: Public Administration & Political Science

Company: Center for Experimental Economics in Education (CEEE)

Location: Xi'an, China

Bobby Tech dreams of developing strategies to reduce poverty or improve educational attainment for a global development institution like the World Bank or the World Health Organization. So his interest was peaked when he learned through a professor the CEEE was seeking summer interns. He knew this experience would give him a better idea of what he wanted to do after graduation.

“It was really exciting for me to see how the things I am learning can be used to actually impact the world and someone's life. I walked away from the experience with a much better understanding of what I wanted to do after graduation.” --Bobby Tech
