What to do after an interview

It’s been 24 hours since your interview. You sent a thank you email already and are anxiously awaiting the employer’s decision. It is appropriate to contact the employer if they haven’t contacted you within the time frame discussed. But, don’t be annoying. Wait two weeks if no time frame was mentioned.

While you’re waiting, investigate average salaries for the position and company you are applying for. Determine your salary requirements based on your living expenses. Then, evaluate your skills and experience (be realistic) so you can articulate your worth to the employer. Now,  you’ll be prepared once the offer comes.

Congratulations! You got an offer! Say thank you and ask when they need your decision. You aren’t expected to answer on the spot. Consider all aspects of salary, benefits, and work/life balance before making a decision. Here are a few items to think about.

  • Salary and benefits
  • Company culture
  • Geographic location
  • Personal leave time
  • Level of responsibility
  • Opportunity for advancement
  • Work hours

Ask if the salary or benefits package is negotiable. If so, use your research to make a counter offer. The employer may have wiggle room in the compensation package or they may tell you, “this is the best we can do.” Be professional and stop the negotiation process if you sense the employer’s frustration. Negotiation makes many people uncomfortable. Meet with a career coach for tips and to practice the conversation.

Finally, thank your references and those who assisted you. That’s it! You’re hired!

Check out these tips for more information.
